The Wheat Ridge Historical Society

50 Plus Years and Going Strong

The Wheat Ridge Historical Society is pleased to announce that Mark Oatis a WR High School Graduate will be painting a Mural on the side of the First Wheat Ridge Post Office at our May Festival.

One of the most exciting things about the mural project is the sign painter who will bring it to life.  Mark Oatis, a local boy who, indeed, has “done good” and who is set to return to Wheat Ridge to do more good. Oatis was raised in the heart of this once sleepy suburb, a little way from where the Old Post Office originally stood at 38th and Teller. The building had been decommissioned as a P.O. by the time he was old enough to run errands for his mom along 38th Avenue.

We have started a donation fund to pay for the materials, renting scaffolding and  miscellaneous expenses for this project. To donate go to our Membership and more page. Click on the donation tab to help with this project.

The Post Office pictured below looks like it had advertising in the past.

We can't wait for the new look to be unveiled !!!

I would like to thank everyone who made our 50th Anniversary year so successful. Our members have done a great job bringing local history to our guests ! This year we won a 55th Anniversary Plate from the Carnation Festival for the Most Creative Entry. Our society was featured in the Wheat Ridge Living Magazine. The photos their wonderful photographer took are amazing. We actually made their year end edition as well. The Wheat Ridge Historical Society also won an award The Norm and Ethel Meyer Award. It is given each year by the Jefferson County Historical Commission (JCHC) to an individual or organization fostering and supporting historic preservation in Jeffco. This award was given to the Wheat Ridge Historical Society while we were celebrating 50 years of preservation support dedicated to Wheat Ridge’s heritage. We also are pleased to announce that the Wheat Ridge Historical Park and Baugh House were designated County Landmark properties on June 3, 2024. What a wonderful year!

We will continue to grow and thrive with your support so won't you join us this year and help support our continuing efforts to preserve and present local history.
