Volunteers working in the Old Post Office in the Historical Park made a surprising discovery recently. Nearly all 52 issues of Volume 1 of the Wheat Ridge Sentinel, published weekly from June 1969 to June 1970, were found nicely preserved. Only eight issues of that first year of publication are missing to make a complete set.

The WRHS would like to find copies of the missing issues and pay for digitization to complete the set.

If you have issues from Volume one of the Wheat Ridge Sentinel, please check your collection for the following editions:

Vol. 1, Issue #2 (June 26, 1969)

Vol. 1, Issue #14 (Sept. 18, 1969)

Vol. 1, Issue #18 (Oct.16, 1969)

Vol. 1, Issue #22 (Nov.13, 1969)

Vol. 1, Issue #27 (Dec.18, 1969)

Vol. 1, Issue #28 (Dec.25, 1969)

Vol. 1, Issue #29 (Jan.1, 1970)

Vol. 1, Issue #34 (Feb.5, 1970)

If you find you have one or more of the missing issues, please consider a temporary loan.

These newspapers are important historical documents. The Sentinel started publishing at the same time Wheat Ridge became an incorporated city, and neither the State Library nor History Colorado has copies of the first volume.

All the copies found will be preserved through digitization, using the SIPA grant funds received last year, then returned promptly to you.

Please email wrhistorical@gmail.com or call 303-421-9111 and leave a message if you have old issues.
